Journal Assignments



All work and written answers are to be done in your Journal. Journals are due on each Monday. Make sure that all entries are labeled, creative and that they have a nice layout so the eye carries through your composition. With any collage work their should be no white of the journal showing through. You may color or draw patterns in the empty spaces to fill in the negative spaces. All collages must be on a 2 page spread or 2 pages that are open at the same time. All questions should be answered the next page.

Assignment #1- Choose a successful ad and a non-successful ad. Answer the following questions about each ad in your Journal. Answer these questions: 1. Why is the ad successful? And why isn’t the ad successful? 2. What could they have done to make to make it better? 3. What 2 elements stand out the most (describe)? 4. What 2 principles stand out the most (and describe)?


Assignment #2- Elements and Principles of Art. Create a visual dictionary of the Elements and Principles of Art by gluing photographs of the Elements and than the Principles. Make sure that you label your image. Label each picture with the word and a brief description. Label each section either Elements or Principle and make sure to start a new page when you transition from Elements to Principles. Use as many pages as necessary. DO NOT mix them up.



Assignment #3- Portraits. Create a 2 page collage of portraits. Portraits in this context is neck and head only. Note the angle in which the photo was taken. Questions: Which angle works best? If you were to take a Portrait what angle would you take it and why?

Assignment #4- Start a Photo Collection of an Object or objects. Create a 2 page collage. You should include photos of a specific object of something that you like or have a relationship with. For example it can be a collage of cats. dogs, shoes or even apples. Use your imagination. Questions: Why did you pick this them for your object? What does it mean to you?



Assignment #5- Still-life. Create a 1 page spread. For this entry find as many successful still-life photographs that have a theme that share things that interest you. For example: they all have red vases, apples or represent Halloween. Questions: Why did you choose this theme? What would you have done differently if you took those photos? How are you going to or did you set up your still-life?


Assignment #6- Color Your World. Create a 2 page collage of photos in a color palette you like. It can be based on your favorite color, warm or cool colors or tones or tints of a single color. Questions: Why did you pick this color scheme? How would you take photos of just one color? What will you have to adjust to make sure you are able to get a good photograph and why?




Assignment #7- Night Photography. Create a 2 page collage of photographs that were taken at night. Take 3 night photographs and print in black and white and add to this page. Make sure that the page is well laid out. Questions: Do you think night photography is hard? Why? Describe what you had to do to make a successful series of night photographs.




Assignment #8- Document an event. Create a 2 page spread of pictures that document something. This could be a recipe, making a project for another class, wedding, Birthday party or any event that is visually interesting.

Assignment #9- Cut Up Pictures. Create a 2 page collage of images that send a very specific message to the viewer all through photographs. No text. An example would be love. Cut images out in the shape of hearts and fill the page. Questions: Why did you pick that theme? How are you using photos to create this theme? Do you think it is successful? Why? What elements and principles are you using?

Assignment #10- Family Photos. Create a 2 page black and white spread of images you took of yourself and your family. This collage needs to represent you and your family members’ personalities as well. You may add color, doodles, cartoon and magazine photos. Questions: Who is in your family? Describe their personalities and yours. What are your trying to say in this collage about your family?
